By the summer of 1918, the Emergency Fleet Corporation had a great array of shipbuilding facilities under its direction, including the huge Hog Island shipyard near Philadelphia, which could launch seventy-eight ships at once. This is a rare and stunning original lithograph poster from 1917, created by the American modernist painter, muralist, and illustrator James Henry Daugherty (1889-1974). The poster depicts a majestic eagle soaring above a fleet of ships sailing towards a distant shore engulfed in flames. The poster was commissioned by the U.S. Shipping Board and Emergency Fleet Corporation to promote American shipbuilding efforts during World War I. The poster is a powerful symbol of patriotism, courage, and determination, as well as a striking example of Daugherty’s bold and dynamic style. The poster is linen-backed, in A- condition, and ready to frame. The outside right border and a small section of the bottom were restored during linen-backing. It measures 20 x 30 inches and has vibrant colors and sharp details. The artist signs the poster in the lower right corner and has the publisher’s information at the bottom.
