Great image featuring the historical visit of King Charles II to Salisbury in 1651 featuring the King and his entourage all smartly dressed in colorful period fashion wearing hats and ruffs, the King holding a sword with a dog by his side, meeting bishops outside Salisbury Cathedral. After the final defeat of Royalists in the English Civil War against Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651, the future Charles II of England (already, by that time, King of Scotland) was forced to flee England. Charles escaped from England into exile in Europe following his defeat by Oliver Cromwell and Cromwell's New Model Army at the Battle of Worcester in 1651, marking the end of the English Civil War. Salisbury Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is an Anglican cathedral in Salisbury, England. The building is regarded as one of the leading examples of Early English Gothic architecture. Its main body was completed in 38 years, from 1220 to 1258. It contains a clock, among the world's oldest working examples, and has one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta. In 2008, it celebrated its 750th birthday.
