"Nothing gave me greater pleasure I suppose than my work on the S-1 locomotive for the Pennsylvania Railroad."
- Raymond Loewy, 1978
Loewy created a maquette for the lithograph based on a 1937 design created by Loewy's design firm. Using the maquette as a guide, mylar sheets (one for each color), were prepared by Jorge Dumas, under the artist's direction, and then chemically transferred onto emulsion-coated aluminum lithographic plates at the American Atelier in New York City.
A first proof was pulled, corrections were made by the artist by hand to the proofs and approved by the artist. A second and third proofs were pulled, which were also corrected and modified by the artist. Thereafter, the artist approved a B.A.T. The edition was then pulled one color at a time under the supervision of Technical Director, Mauro Guiffreda at the American Atelier. The finished lithograph has been changed substantially from the original maquette and first proofs.
Each print in the edition was inspected and initialed by hand in pencil by Loewy at The American Atelier in December 1978.
