Paramount Pictures mounted a very art deco inspired campaign for Marlene Dietrich's Blonde Venus in 1932 using the resources of several fine artists. They issued a special one sheet of a "Color Print Enlargement - Like a Painting in Oils," essentially an art print by noted painter Charles Lennox Wright II. The Paramount art department also had Aris Bacci working for them painting design concepts for posters, ad campaigns, and storyboards. Bacci was an accomplished "futuristic" artist, and an intimate of Ettore Buggati, becoming artistic adviser and ad director for the famed Bugatti line in the 1920s. Bacci began working in Hollywood in 1930, first at Warner Brothers, then also for Paramount and MGM. This splendid gouache painting resembles most closely the style B one sheet for the title. It's a lovely rendering, very reminiscent of some publicity stills used at the time of the film's release, featuring Dietrich's trademark "sensual suffering." |
