In ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, people placed winged lion statues or griffins outside their homes as a symbol of prosperity, power, bravery, wisdom, and royalty among others. These marvelous mythical winged lions are still being used for their spiritual meaning and majestic beauty. Frank Newbould was born in Bradford and studied at Bradford College of Art. He worked as a black-and-white illustrator and as a poster artist was renowned for his use of bright flat areas of color in his work. During the First World War he produced few posters but made many designs for the London and North Eastern Railways (LNER), London Transport and the Orient Line during the inter-war period. At the beginning of the Second World War, Newbould produced a recruiting poster for the Auxiliary Fire Service and in 1942 joined the War Office as an assistant to Abram Games (1914-1996).
