Her arms are outstretched, welcoming the crowds on the pathway below. Saint Therese of Lisieux. The spread of the cult of St. Thérèse of Lisieux is one of the most impressive religious manifestations of our time. During her brief years on earth, this young French Carmelite was often indistinguishable from many other devoted nuns, yet her death brought an almost immediate awareness of her unique gifts. Through her letters, the word-of-mouth tradition originating from her fellow nuns, and especially through the publication of Histoire d'un âme, Thérèse of the Child Jesus, or "The Little Flower," soon came to mean a great deal to countless people; she showed them the path to perfection in the small things of everyday life. Miracles and graces were attributed to her intercession, and within twenty-eight years after her death, this simple young nun was canonized. In 1936, a basilica in her honor was opened and blessed by Cardinal Pacelli, who, in 1944 as Pope, declared her the secondary patroness of France. Commemorating the grand inauguration of the Basilica of Lisieux, located in Lisieux, France, the event took place during the Grand Solemnities from July 7 to July 11, 1937, as part of the National Eucharistic Congress. The Basilica depicted in the vintage poster is the Basilica of Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, dedicated to Saint Thérèse, a highly revered Catholic saint known as “The Little Flower of Jesus.” The basilica, a noteworthy landmark in Lisieux, was constructed to honor her canonization in 1925 and continues to serve as a significant pilgrimage site.
