TWA (Trans World Airlines) was established in 1924 as Transcontinental & Western Air. The airline's initial route connected New York to Los Angeles, followed by numerous domestic routes. After World War II, TWA expanded its services to Europe, the Middle East, and Asia while under the control of Howard Hughes from 1939 to 1961. Hughes played a significant role in promoting and expanding the airline's routes. The economy improved significantly, leading to an increase in air travel for both business and leisure. Posters became essential tools in promoting TWA and air travel. Beginning in the 1970s, the airline entered a period of decline, culminating in a third bankruptcy that resulted in its acquisition by American Airlines in 2001. At its peak, TWA operated in 132 destinations worldwide and maintained a fleet of 190 aircraft. Klein is renowned for his impactful advertising work. While he created illustrations for Broadway shows, Hollywood films, the United States Army, and various corporate clients, he is most remembered for the iconic travel images he produced for Howard Hughes and Trans World Airlines (TWA) during the 1950s and 1960s. Klein explored the field of travel advertising — his signature style incorporated famous landmarks depicted in vibrant colors and an abstract approach, reflecting the excitement and enthusiasm of travel in the post-war era. He is best known for his iconic travel images created for Howard Hughes’ Trans World Airlines (TWA) during the 1950s and 1960s. The Vintage Poster stands as a beacon of expertise in vintage posters.
